By contributing data to the SWOT project, the data providers and SWOT agree to the following terms:
- Data providers will always have their data explicitly attributed to them in all online maps and printed SWOT reports. All data received, whether raw counts or binned, will be viewable online at the OBIS-SEAMAP site (http://seamap.env.duke.edu) and on the SWOT website (http://www.seaturtlestatus.org), and will be subject to the OBIS-SEAMAP Terms of Use (given below) to protect against use without permission of the original data provider.
- In printed SWOT Reports/Publications, exact count data will be displayed as binned values.
- Data contributed to SWOT will be used for calculation of abundance and trend estimates (long-term) at the global and management unit level in support of SWOT’s long term science goals. These analyses will be performed several years from now, once sufficient data have been accumulated. See below for a brief explanation of SWOT’s long term science goals and minimum data standards.
- Data providers are responsible for keeping their contact information current with the SWOT database manager. This is to allow SWOT to pursue additional uses of the database under the advisement of the SWOT Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) and to garner permissions for data use from the original data providers. SWOT will make every effort to contact and receive permission from the original data providers when a new use is planned for the data, but lack of response from a data provider who has already given data to SWOT will be considered an implicit “yes” to use the data in analyses recommended by the SAB. This is to ensure that data contributed to SWOT does not become unusable at a future date. In any case, the data will always be attributed to the original data provider with appropriate citation.
